My husband came in last night with a dirty, matted little terrier mix in his arms. Apparently, he almost hit her on a 50 mph road while he was working. Being the wonderful man that he is (and definitely one of the many things I love about him), he pulled off to the side of the road and rounded her up. There was a close call or two while she continued to jet into the road and into the path of oncoming cars (the term "jet" being used loosely here because she doesn't move very fast). He finally got ahold of her and she was obviously a stray. She was dirty, matted, with burs clinging to her fur and a tick or two making a dinner of her.
She's still with us until we either find her owners or find someone willing to give her a good home. If we can't find either, it will be us. That will make 5 dogs in our house, but she is really quite non-obtrusive. She's older (I'm guessing around 10 years old at least) and doesn't have a whole lot of energy or enthusiasm. She likes to sleep. :) She's a terrier mix as best as I can figure. We'll have to get her to the vet to find out if her health is okay and get her some shots. Until then, she's been de-tangled, de-matted, bathed, de-ticked, and she'll be getting a nail clipping tonight when the hubby gets home from work. She's a sweetheart. She doesn't appear to be starving, so I'm guessing she may have been an outdoor dog because she was looking such a mess. I guess she also could be an indoor dog runaway--they can get pretty dirty being outside for just a week or so. Either way, she's safe and sound now and hopefully she has an owner praying for her safe return. If not, she's better off with us or with a family willing to give her a forever home anyway.
Our four dogs and three cats have had no problems with her at all. She really just sleeps a lot and, like I said, she's quite unobtrusive. She's a sweet little old lady. She's a little smaller than our smallest dog, Chance. I'm guessing her at about 20 lbs., but she's short, too. Eric (hubby) has been calling her Gizmo because she looks like a scruffy, funny-eared gremlin.
Below are two pics of her. The first I took to post on PetFBI.org in the hopes that someone is looking for her and checks there and the second I took after her bath when she curled up in our rocking chair to go to sleep. The second picture is the best display of her true coloring. She's not quite white, as she appears to be in the first pic, but rather a creamy biege, near-white. Parts of her are true white, but her back and legs are more of the creamy biege color.
